ShopNotes 117 — The Shape of Our Shop

By: Phil Huber
Even if you have a workshop, talking about setting up shop is fun ... and useful.

This episode is inspired by a listener/viewer question from Randy who wanted to know the size of Woodsmith Shop set and if it would be possible to have a comfortable, practical space.

ShopNotes Podcast -- setting up a woodworking shop

The "set" for the Woodsmith Shop is 36 feet wide and 25 feet deep. It holds all the tools we need for building a wide variety of woodworking projects. The "fourth wall" would be ideal for the things we don't have: lumber storage and the dust collector.

It's easy to think about the big, high-profile tools while overlooking some essentials: - Hardware & Supply Storage - Dust Collection - Air Compressor - Project Space - Outlets - Windows

John, Logan, and Phil talk about the TV show set and how it's equipped. They also discuss changes they'd make for their "ideal" shop space.

For example, Phil would probably eliminate the table saw and add a horizontal slot mortiser. Oh yeah, and a wood burning stove. Though he's worked in a small shop for so long, a big shop would be too much for his needs.

Logan suggests adding a drum sander and a large, mobile assembly table.

A vintage ShopNotes assembly table would look nice, too. Assembly cart

The assembly cart in this plan would be a great solution for many shop spaces.
