ShopNotes Podcast 202 - That's a Star Trek Reference

By: Phil Huber
Shop tours, deep fandom cuts, and more Shopsmith.

One of the main topics of conversation on this podcast has been the construction and fitting out of Logan's home shop. In addition to his own fortress of solitude, the space serves and home base of PopWood. He uses it for photos, videos, and classes.

Over the last few years, we've been able to use his current stage as a starting point for covering shop setup like lighting, heating and cooling, tools, layout, dust collection, and storage.

Since he has the space, Logan wondered about joining two table saws side by side. His idea is to connect two SawStops; one for cutting and the other with a dado blade for joinery work. However, a listener commented that Mike Farrington recently posted a video where he joined two different machines.

The concept is there ... and so apparently is the demand. Check out Mike's video. Mike has one saw set for crosscuts, with a sliding table. The other saw will be for ripping.

Shop Tour

We had a tour group come through from Johnson county Iowa. One of the tour members was wearing a Star Trek shirt that took it to the next level. Much appreciated.

Question of the Week

John brought up the ShopSmith we found for sale at the local Habitat ReStore. It would be fun to have one here in the shop, however, that particular model was missing some key bits (for the price).

That sparked a larger conversation about places we frequent in order to find deals. It might be an antique mall, flea market, library, bookstore ... For me it's The Picker Knows in West Des Moines.

My question to you is what is the place you check in on regularly to get the good stuff?

Woodworking In America 2024

Big news. After hyping it for a few weeks now, tickets for October's Woodworking in America are live. Check out the list of speakers and topics. Then please sign up.

This event is only a few months away. We've been working at it for some time. Frankly, in spite of the work involved, I really enjoy these events. It's fun to meet up with readers, fans of the show, and to hang out with woodworkers and talk about tools, projects, and ideas ... and not get eyerolls.
